The soils of Usigliano originate from Pliocene formations created by the evolution of an ancient coastal and alluvial plain rich in marine fossils. Their texture ranges from sandy-silty to medium-textured soils. Exposure, regular rainfall, constant ventilation and cooler night-time temperatures create a microclimate particularly favourable to viticulture.
The vines are trained using the spurred cordon system, with a density of 5,000 plants per hectare. The mainly south and south-west facing vineyards include Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, together with the white varieties Chardonnay and Viognier.
Harvesting is carried out by hand by expert hands, selecting the grapes directly in the vineyard. In the winery, a further visual selection berry by berry is a fundamental step in our pursuit of quality.
The estate also grows around 3,000 olive trees, mainly Frantoio and Leccino cultivars, from which we produce our extra virgin olive oil.
Being custodians of the beauty and fertility of our soil means practising organic farming with a broad view of sustainability. We respect the land we work and protect biodiversity that can only be built over time, through years of care and attention to the environment.
With the same approach, we support the natural balance of the vines so that their fruit can fully express the characteristics of the place where it grows.
The soil of Usigliano is the result of millions of years of transformation. Once part of a Pliocene seabed, it is now sandy and fertile, rich in marine fossils and naturally available microelements.
Our work is aimed at building long-lasting soil fertility, strengthening the vitality of roots and leaves and helping the vines draw nutrients from sand rich in compounds that ultimately become part of the grape and, finally, of the wine.
Our ethical and sustainable approach is reflected in our farming practices. Green manure and selective mowing contribute organic matter and vitality to the sandy soils, while low yields and vine-by-vine pruning help each plant reach its natural balance. We also collect rainwater from the roofs during winter for agricultural use, reducing the consumption of drinking water.
Our goal is to produce high-quality wines while respecting the balance and beauty of the land: elegant, aromatic and harmonious wines in which freshness, persistence and savoury character become a recognisable expression of Usiglian del Vescovo.
