Usiglian Del Vescovo
Usiglian del Vescovo extends over approximately 160 hectares, including 25 hectares of vineyards and 15 hectares of olive groves. Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Chardonnay and Viognier grow on soils rich in sand and marine fossils, in an area influenced by the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. These conditions give the wines a distinctive identity, marked by freshness and savoury character. At the heart of the estate stands the Villa of Usigliano, the historic residence once connected to the farms and castles that still give their names to the vineyards.
OUR HISTORY
Located on the gentle hills of Valdera in the municipality of Palaia, Usiglian del Vescovo owes its name to a dispute dating back to the 1100s between the Bishop of Pisa and that of Lucca (Bishop is Vescovo in Italian). Palaia belonged to the latter, while his rival had been assigned the property of the fief of Usigliano; the castle of the same name also dates back to those years.
Usigliano has maintained its identity as a small and industrious agricultural village over the centuries. Today the estate covers about 160 hectares, of which about 25 are vineyards and about 15 olive groves. The manor house of Usigliano is located in the centre of the estate, with all the farms and castles scattered throughout the hill, which give the vineyards of Usigliano their name today.
Our vineyards stand on soils characterised by a noticeable presence of sand and marine fossils, 250 metres above sea level.
Their position ensures a particularly favourable microclimate for wine production of the finest quality. Our vines therefore benefit from a particular terroir that gives wines a special flavour and freshness.
OUR COMPANY PHILOSOPHY
Quality, responsibility and respect for the land guide every choice at Usiglian del Vescovo. We farm organically and care for the vineyards through attentive, largely manual work, combining experience, tradition and innovation.
The winery follows the same vision: contemporary technology at the service of ancient knowledge. Being custodians of this landscape means protecting its identity, biodiversity and ability to express itself through wine.
ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE
For us, organic farming means first and foremost caring for soil fertility and for the biodiversity that characterises Usiglian del Vescovo. It is a daily commitment to the present and to future generations, because wine quality begins with the balance of the ecosystem in which the vines grow.
The same principle guides our choices in the winery and in our materials, favouring recycled, recyclable and lower-impact solutions wherever possible.
